One explanation I came up with is goes something like this: Ring-Ring-Ring... Assad: "Mahmoud ol' buddy listen, the US is on my case right now over the Hariri thing. Can you do something to create a distraction while I destroy the evidence after which I resume low-profile?" Ahmadinejad: "Like what?" Assad: "You know, a riot, embassy storming, blogger whipping, shit like that." Ahmadinejad: "OK. I'll put some advisers on it because I've got an invited keynote speech at that "Zionist Inhalation" conference.... (lightbulb) wait a minute!" I have not read much of the commentary.
