I did a similar thing with my 40G iPod when I thought I would be clever and replace the battery myself. I replaced the battery, but the headphone jack stopped working. There are a number of places that will do resonable fixes. I have used iPodResQ and TechRestore

I’m taking boB up on his very kind offer.
@Sid — that would be the alternative. The spousal entity (whose iPod this is for) has identified a source for a replacement headphone assembly, but I’m trying it this way.
With all the trash I have (because “I might need it one day”), I have faith that others will be holding onto just the ‘junk’ I need.
BTW, the pack rat syndrome is a fascinating example of Skinnerian reinforcement in action. Once every year or so, I get rewarded by finding a use for some ancient crap I have had lying around for ages. Today, it was a decade-old pair of bike brake cable ferrules (retail value maybe $00.50). This is enough reward to keep probably a cubic meter of additional junk in my basement for a year. :^)

If you’re willing to spend a few bucks you might be able to get a new one from ifixit.com. I got a new battery from them and it works very well…

I agree it would be nice to buy insurance AFTER you suffer a loss. Not an option in this case. ;^)

While the thought of mangling iPod hardware appears sexy, it’s probably harder work than purchasing an extended warranty (if available). ;)
