@FactExplorer: I can't agree more. This is what I whined about in my essay on "killer."
@Nicko: Pity I can't give it a whirl, myself.
@Jason: A good question, especially as the answer is itself a question, "African or European?"

If you are interested in cool knowledge inference systems you might want to take a look at http://www.trueknowledge.com/ It's clearly more advanced than 'Alpha' since it's been beta for much of the last year :-)

What bothers me about so many of the reviews, is that most of them are of the 'my-tool-can-beat-your-tool' variety.
Will WAlpha 'beat' Google? Why does that seem to be the only important issue?
WAlpha can be a learning tool, a way to ask questions that might otherwise require an expert or years of education to expect an answer to. It can be a way to explore knowledge, to learn and have fun doing so. We can't really imagine all of the benefits of a 'knowledge computational engine' until we see it and try it out.
Hopefully, once WAlpha hits production, we will hear real discussions about WA's value and uniqueness, examples of how students used it to better understand e.g. their math curriculum, and specific feedback which will help to evolve Wolfram Alpha further.
